MHC faculty created materials can be freely copied for classroom use. The College maintains a license for the reuse of content developed by faculty throughout the term of their employment, See MHC's Intellectual Property Policy for more information. If using another faculty members work, remember to cite them appropriately.

You may link to as much content as you like. Please, ensure the links you provide lead to legal content.

Copyright does not apply to insubstantial amounts of work. This is why you don't need to get copyright permission for the sources you include in an academic paper. You may use small amounts of other people's work without permission.

Print copies of Library licensed materials are most often allowed. It's recommended to print directly from the library website.

Online, it's recommended to provide a permalink to library content so your students or classmates can find the content directly from the Library website. See the How-to section for instructions on creating a permalink. 

Anything in the public domain can be used however you like.

In Canada, the public domain includes any work whose author has died and 50 years have past. See the Public Domain page for more information.

The Creative Commons, although not the only open licenses that you will see, are the most predominant. The cc logo notifies you that the creator of the work has chosen to share it. Read the license closely as there are six different licenses that prescribe the way you can use the content.

Textbook publishers often provide extra resources for those faculty who are using their textbook as a required text in their course. You may use this content in the way that the publisher intended, if you are unsure if they would allow a specific use please contact your publisher rep and get written (email) permission. Remember, you will most likely not be allowed to use this content if you adopt a different text in future iterations of your course. 

You can use anything on the internet as long as you cite it appropriately, there is no clearly visible notice prohibiting the use, and there are no Technological Protection Measures restricting use.

You may perform or play a movie, sound recording, live tv, or a play in class as long as the audience will be made up primarily of students.

You may use portions of someone else's work to create something new as long as you are using a legal copy, citing it appropriately, and using it solely for non-commercial purposes.

You may record a news program or news commentary program for use in class. This exception excludes documentaries.

You may record your lesson for the purpose of telecommunication. Students may also make their own recordings, however, their recordings must be destroyed within 30 days after the final exam.

You may reproduce a work in an alternate format in order to display it for your class as long as there is no commercial option in the preferred format available.

When copying with the intent of using the Fair Dealing exception a longer analysis is required see the Fair Dealing section. 

Most often, the following copies are allowed under Fair Dealing:

One article of a journal,
One chapter of a book,
An entire newspaper article,
One short story, play, poem, essay, musical score from a book containing similar works,
Or, an entire artistic work (painting, photo, drawing, diagram, etc.)
