Copyright and Intellectual Property (IP) sessions, provided upon request, will strive to instill students with the following concepts listed by the Associaiton of College & Research Libraries (2000) in their Framework for information literacy for higher education:
- Respect the original ideas of others;
- Value the skills, time, and effort needed to produce knowledge;
- And, see themselves as contributors to the information marketplace rather than only consumers of it.
Key outcomes for copyright instruction include:
- Understand what copyright is and what rights students have as creators;
- Identify exceptions in the Copyright Act that allow for the use of third-party materials;
- And, recognize open licensing labels and how to make use of open content.
Key outcomes for IP instruction include:
- Identify what IP is and the main types serviced by the Canadian Intellectual Property Office;
- Recognize when IP protection is needed;
- And, understand where to access IP information and services.
