Student Assessment

"Student Assessment is an integral part of instruction, as it determines whether or not the goals of education are being met. Assessment affects decisions about grades, placement, advancement, instructional needs, curriculum, and, in some cases, funding" (edutopia.org, para. 1).

Student Assessment can be approached in a variety of ways:

  • Formative Assessment or assessment FOR learning seeks to monitor and improve the learning process by gathering ongoing feedback from students, for example classroom Polls.
  • Summative Assessment or assessment OF learning measures the level of knowledge obtained at the end of an instructional unit, for example assigning a grade to semester exams.
